Depth Study:
Stage 5 Year 9 Core Study - Depth Study 3: Australians at War. World Wars I and II (1914-1918, 1939-1945) Relevance, Possible Engagement Factor, Level of Difficulty and Prior Knowledge Required:
Australia’s involvement in WWI and WWII highlights its role in the global context during the twentieth century. This unit will allow students to understand the developments that shaped Australia’s social, cultural, economic and political role in the modern world, thus emphasising the relevance of the depth study to 21st century students. This depth study aims to be highly engaging through interactive lessons rich with a variety of educational activities. The activities developed incorporate a range of primary and secondary sources in written, audio and visual forms. The diversity of sources used aims to cater for the different learning styles and needs of students. Furthermore, the lessons are developed to ensure that the level of difficulty does not marginalise students based on their academic ability. Students with different levels of ability are able to learn and participate equally with the availability of adjusted/differentiated activities. The activities encourage and support students to engage with historical inquiry skills by incorporating student-centred learning approaches which allow the students to take greater responsibility for their learning. Prior Knowledge of the historical skills learnt in stage 4 is required for this depth study. These skills include comprehension of historical texts, terms and concepts, analysis and use of sources, identifying different perspectives and interpretations, research skills, empathetic understanding and explanation and communication. Students also require some prior knowledge of WWI and WWII and Australia's involvement. Inquiry Questions - What were the main causes of both wars? How did Australia become involved in both wars? What was Australia's significance and contribution in both wars? How were both wars significant to Australia? |
